Building’s Double Century Celebrations for Logierait Parish Church
THIS HISTORIC CHURCH is reputed to have been founded by St. Cedd (pronounced Kaid) about 650A.D. Both he and his brother Chad, had been converted to Christianity in Northumberland.
To further their studies they went to Iona, and it was on their return that they stayed in the Tay Valley, where Chad founded churches in Grantully and Foss, whilst Cedd set up those at Fortingall and Logierait.
A healing well named after St.Cedd is said to have dried up when a market held annually in his honour ceased to take place in the village. The name Logierait is derived from the gaelic “Lag Mo Ched” (hollow of St.Cedd), and latterly became “Lagan Ratha”, or Court of Justice, where the lords of that period meted out their punishments.
The present church building dates from 1805, but the site and foundations are from the Culdee Cell of Columbian times. A Pictish stone, now inside the church, dates from 830-850 A.D. A second stone circa 900 A.D. stands outside in the churchyard, which is one of the few remaining graveyards where mort-safes (to deter body-snatchers) can still be seen.
