Arthritis Care in Atholl Update

The first meeting of the new session of Arthritis Awareness in Atholl began, in Moulin Hall, with the AGM. Sandy Mathieson, Chairperson, welcomed a large gathering of members old and new.
The business meeting was brief with reports from the secretary and treasurer showing that the organisation was a vibrant and healthy one. The committee was re-elected, with Mrs Mary Ballantine joining the committee to replace Mrs Betty Condie. Mr Sandy Mathieson remains as chairperson and Mrs Sybil Currie as secretary.

Funds’ Disbursement
Mr Mathieson announced to the meeting that the committee had decided to disburse some of funds - £250 to the Senior Citizens’ bus and £500 to the Arthritis Research Campaign.

Mr Donald Isles collected the cheque on behalf of the Senior Citizens’ bus and Mrs Marion Hall, othe speaker, accepted the donation to ARC. Mr Mathieson asked that the donation should go specifically to research into childhood arthritis.

Speaker
Mrs Marion Hall lives in Consett Co Durham and is the fundraiser for ARC for the north of England and Scotland. She gave a very interesting talk about the work of the Charity which was set up in 1936. ARC raises funds to promote medical research into the cause, treatment and cure of arthritis conditions, to educate medical students, doctors and healthcare professionals about arthritis and to provide information to the general public.
She stressed that 92p in every £1 raised goes to research and no money is spent on advertising. She also stressed that, in the last 70 years, there has been a huge improvement in the treatment of the condition with new drugs becoming available all the time.
Apart from speaking to groups Mrs Hall organises fundraising events, corporate events and challenges for promoting teamwork. She is very involved in organising participation in the Great North Run and other similar sponsored events and also in encouraging the 70 or so groups in her area who run fundraising events.
Last year ARC raised £26 million of which £25 million went in grants to research bodies around the country.

Next Meeting
This will be on Monday 1 October in Moulin Hall at 2. 30pm, when Rev Julia Bartholomew will tell of the delights of introducing youngsters to sailing. Her talk is entitled “All at Sea”. New members very welcome. All enquiries to Sybil Currie 01796 472868
