Birks Cinema Project: Update
The Friends of the Birks have appointed local architect Robin Baker, of Birnam-based Gaia Architects, to carry out a costing for the revival of the Birks Cinema. Gaia is known for its creativity in ecological design – something the Friends feel will be important in planning any new community cinema venture for Aberfeldy.
The Friends’ aim is to build a new, modern cinema within the shell of the old Birks Cinema building in the Square, and the costing is the first step in the process. Robin Baker’s work will lay down a basic design and give the group a figure around which to build future fund-raising. He is due to report at the end of October. |

In the meantime, the Friends of the Birks took a stand at the Aberfeldy Show and, despite the rain, enjoyed talking to visitors about the cinema, raising funds and signing up new members. They will also be at Victoria Park on 22 September.
If you would like to show your support for the cinema project and join the Friends, please contact Secretary Charlotte Flower on 01887 830307 or email flowercharlotte@btconnect.com.
Also, the Friends have established that the first film shown at the Birks, when it opened in 1939, was Disney’s ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, but what was the last film ever shown there?
Do you know? Please contact Charlotte if you do...
