Glen Lyon's After School Soccer Club

Pupils at Glenlyon Primary School are now enjoying a new after school sports club thanks to the efforts of the local community.

Starting with an idea from staff member and keen footballer, David Price, Head Teacher Moira Menzies enlisted the help of Active School Co-ordinator, Karen Todd to set about starting a football club for local young people.

With a local landowner allowing the club to mark out a pitch on a piece of his land and football goals, balls and bibs purchased with Big Lottery funding, the club has now enlisted all 12 pupils at the school.

Councillor Elizabeth Grant, Convener of the Lifelong Learning Committee, said, “This is a great example of how enthusiastic parents can make such a positive contribution to helping a school community develop new ideas that will encourage young people to get active.

“As well as coming up with the initial idea, Mr Price, who is the school bus driver, has also successfully completed a football coaching course - so now he takes the pupils to the pitch, works with other enthusiastic parents to provide football coaching and then drives the pupils home after the coaching session.

“I understand that the children are over the moon that they now have their own local sports club that they don’t have to travel far to get to.

“The local community has really pulled together to make this happen. The pupils will obviously enjoy the immediate benefit of being able to take part in local sports at and easily accessible local venue but they will also have learned what can be achieved when people work together. In the longer term that will be valuable in helping to nurture them as active citizens.”

If any parents or volunteers think they have any spare time and would like to assist or get into coaching a sport they may have once played, please get in touch with Karen Todd, Active School Co-ordinator for Pitlochry and Breadalbane Cluster Primary Schools – 01796 473059 or Email - KTodd@pitlochry.pkc.sch.uk
