Heritage Society Outing
On Thursday 14 June the Society had an outing to the Highland Folk Museum at Kingussie and Newtonmore. After a wet spell the sun shone down on us throughout our visit, and we thoroughly enjoyed our insight into Highland communities of the past.
Kingussie museum was founded in 1944 by Dr Isobel Grant when she moved her collection of bygones from its earlier home on Iona. At Kingussie we enjoyed items and machinery which gave us a real appreciation of the labour-intensive nature of the agriculture of the past. |

Inspired by open-air museums in Sweden Dr Grant dreamt of a similar collection in Scotland. with reconstructed buildings saved from demolition. Her dream became a reality when Newtonmore was finally opened in 1996.
Buildings include a school of the 1930’s which jogged memories of inkwells and having to clean them out! There is a church, farm, post office, tailor’s shop, Joiner’s workshop and many more. This is an 80 acre site and two old buses are available to transport visitors short of time. The fascinating 18th century township, ‘Baile Gean’ should not be missed.
