PHS Pupils' Disaster Recovery Training

For a fortnight in mid June the education of all second year pupils at Pitlochry High School has concentrated on students studying life in Central America to “train” them to tackle a hurricane disaster recovery scenario.
Briefings, discussions, planning and training took place in all areas of the school over the fortnight, culminating with a practical ‘problem solving’ day with pupils in teams, undertaking a variety of tasks to put their training into practice.
The tasks included building shelters, designing and building water transportation and storage systems as well as proving a hot meal using only two matches!

Said Mrs Gardner, coordinator for the event: “One of the most rewarding aspects of this event is the pupils realisation that their teachers- who are normally seen as specialists in their own departments- have the necessary expertise to support them beyond their subject areas."

She continued: " I’ve seen a Social Subject teacher communicating with students in a foreign language advising them on design structures! The day has been great for pupils, great for teachers and a great way of promoting engineering”

Ian Sadler's pictures capture some of the evident enthusiasm displayed by the youngsters during the training sessions
