Society Seeks Out Shielings

On Saturday 15 September a select group of members were conducted around East Schiehallion by archaeologist and fellow member Clare Thomas. Starting at the Braes of Foss we progressed to the Allt Mor and then up to Ruighe nan Coireachan.
The remains of an amazing number of settlements were demonstrated along with some history of the area. Outlines of previous dwellings were pointed out many now in deep heather, along with possible byre houses, a corn-drying kiln and cultivation rigs.
Two large groups of shielings were visited in Gleann Mor and north-east Schiehallion. On the way back to the car park we visited the cupmarked stone at NN 753 553.
