Local Rugby Supports FairTrade

On Saturday 20 October, in ‘One World Week’ the Atholl Highlanders Rugby Football Club launched their new training ‘Fairtrade’ balls, where fair prices, wages and humane working conditions are offered to the producers of the rubber and the stitching on the balls.

Squad player and member of the Aberfeldy Fairtrade Steering Group, Ken Lyall stated, “I am delighted that the Atholl Highlanders have embraced Fairtrade principals by purchasing these training balls. The Squad have had a chance to use them already and all find them every bit as good as the match balls that ‘Gilbert’ produces. Embracing Fairtrade strengthens the huge profile that Highland Perthshire has with Aberfeldy being the first Fairtrade Town in Scotland along with the many individuals, local community groups and businesses throughout the Highland area that also use, supply or promote Fairtrade.”

Club President Dave Walker stated, “This team, only just formed early this year, was founded as a community team that bridges the gap of competitive rugby in Highland Perthshire, complementing existing rugby clubs such as Blairgowrie, Crieff and Perthshire.

“We are committed to taking a full part in the community spirit that Highland Perthshire has, and assist local groups and businesses when possible.”

Dave concluded: “We are always looking for new players, so if anyone is interested in playing for us, come along to our training, Tuesday and Thursday 6.45pm at the Pitlochry Recreation Ground, or contact Dave on 07856383120.”

After the launch of the new balls, the Highlanders went on to win their game against Strathspey (Kingussie), 21 – 5. They now sits proudly second in the SRU National Caledonia League Division two (Midlands), after 6 games.
