Macmillan Cancer Support Update

The AGM was held in the John Kyd Hall, Strathtay on 27 April.

The sum raised in 2006 amounted to a staggering £35,874.00 which will go a long way to help people in this area who are living with cancer. We all know someone who has or has had cancer and it is comforting to know that the support part of Macmillan Cancer Support is always at hand.

This money has come from every individual who has contributed by attending or donating to one of the fund raising functions held throughout the year and we would like to say thank you to every single person.

An enormous thanks to Linda Ford and Gillian Hutton who took part the Great Wall of China Challenge Walk raising a tremendous £5,806.74 and to every person who organised or helped run the national event The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning raising a grand total of £7,078.47 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Other events last year which have contributed to Macmillan in a big way are Bridget and Neil Black’s Gatehouse Nursery Barn Warming, The Crannog Evening (Barrie Andrian), the NFU Tractor Rally organised by the Thomson family and the Fearnan WRI ladies for the Christmas Carol Concert.

We could not raise anything near this amount without all these extra events arranged and organised by individuals out with our local committee.

We are also very fortunate to have Sylvia Jeffrey as the local Fund Raising Manager – who has the ability to stand up and talk about Macmillan Cancer Support at the drop of a hat and attends many of the local events – her enthusiasm is infectious!

A new Palliative Care Unit is being planned at Perth Royal Infirmary by Macmillan Cancer Support, in partnership with the NHS, at the cost of five million pounds. No, that is not our sole responsibility, but we would like to be able to do our bit as every penny counts! It is sensible and much more convenient to have this unit centralised in Perth rather than everyone travelling that extra distance to Dundee.

Many people have been fundraising since the beginning of the year - an outstanding example being Jane Bradley who, sponsored by friends, relations and colleagues, completed the London Marathon and raised £4,500.00! (see opposite)

The Aberfeldy and District Gaelic Choir together with the Welsh Cancer Challenge Singers and Pitlochry and Blair Atholl Pipe Band holds a “Music Extravaganza” at Dunkeld Cathedral on Thursday 14 June.
