Tasty Repast from the Iron Age Past
From soup to nuts, savouries - including wild boar stew, salmon, and creative vegetarian dishes based on some Iron Age plant remains - washed down with suitably-themed beverages, will all be provided and consumed in aid of a worthy cause.
The authentic ‘Iron Age buffet’, inspired by a wide range of food discoveries from the Scottish Crannog Centre team’s underwater excavations, will be held on Thursday, 15 June in an evening of food and fun entitled ‘Iron Age Inspiration: Crannog Cooking for Macmillan’.
Organic, Fairtrade, and local produce will be included in this first-ever charity fundraiser to be hosted by the Crannog Centre.
The evening will include live Scottish music around the fire in the Crannog to complete the Iron Age atmosphere. A limited number of tickets are available at £20 per person for the event, which will begin at 7:30pm. ALL proceeds

from the evening will go to Macmillan Cancer Support. Barrie Andrian, Managing Director of the Scottish Crannog Centre, said: “We are delighted to contribute to Macmillan Cancer Support in this way. I am sure the ancient crannog people suffered dreadful diseases over which they had no control, and on a personal note, three generations of my family have suffered from at least one form of cancer. We hope this will become an annual occasion in support of the fine work carried out by Macmillan and all of its supporters.”
This should be a unique occasion to enjoy the flavour of life, food and the environment of the early settlers of this area, as well as aiding a worthy cause. For further details on this and other Scottish Crannog events visit the website at www.crannog.co.uk or phone 01887 830583.
Macmillan's Work
Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer providing practical, medical, emotional and financial support. Working alongside people affected by cancer Macmillan works to improve cancer care. One in three of us will get cancer, 1.2 million of us are living with it, cancer affects us all.
The Aberfeldy, Strathtay and District Committee of Macmillan Cancer Support was formed in 1964 and spans a large part of Highland Perthshire, with each major settlement area covered by at least one member of committee. Chairwoman Mrs Trish Orr leads this group of twenty-two members with a primary goal of raising money in the form of donations, community events and supporting individual fund raising for this worthy cause.
This is supplemented by a network of Macmillan collection boxes and a large catchment area for return and recycling of copper, aluminium and cans. Members participate in Macmillan’s national event the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and Christmas card and calendar sales.
Local Input
Over the years the local committee has raised money to help Macmillan fund many services including nurses, doctors and buildings such as Roxburgh House in Dundee. It has also contributed towards financing Macmillan grants. Money raised locally is used to benefit the local community. Aberfeldy, Strathtay and District Macmillan Cancer Support is always on the lookout for innovative ways of accomplishing this goal. The committee and the Scottish Crannog Centre feel ‘Iron Age Inspiration: Crannog Cooking for Macmillan’ is a special way of participating with dinner, entertainment and raising awareness and funds for this worthy cause.
