Eventful Spring at the Crannog

Willow-weaving demonstrations during March, followed by an activity aimed at offering ‘affordable housing’ for birds, fired off the Scottish Crannog Centre’s environmental events this Spring. Bat boxes and homes for garden birds were churned out by youngsters and veteran bird watchers alike, destined to create a feathered neighbourhood for the crannog.

The grandest house is set aside for the larger fowl, as the crannog itself is now home to at least two ducks who have chosen the comfy bracken inside for their nests. Some of the younger visitors to the crannog have already spotted the growing number of eggs.

Perhaps ironically, hatching should just about coincide with the Centre’s next event on the 23 April, the annual Celtic Food and Drink Festival. This popular event is supported each year by the Heart of Scotland Herb Society, and a

range of local producers including Kenmore Bakery, Tombuie Smokehouse, Stephen Dow, and Cairn O’Mhor wines. This year’s event will also feature a larger marketplace, with the chance to taste even more goodies inspired by discoveries underwater from the crannogs in Loch Tay.

Soon after, the Crannog Crew will usher in the better weather with their now annual Celtic May Day celebration of the traditional rites of Spring on the 1 May. This will feature making green man masks, faerie crowns, face-painting and a bit of story-telling to set the scene. Two weeks later, the Festival of Nettles will feature a two-day blast of food-tasting, and arts and crafts demonstrations, and a range of competitions including ‘grasp the nettle.’ The Crannog crew is hoping that local restaurants will join in the fun again as last year, and put nettles on the menu over the 13/ 14 May festival.

There is something for everyone throughout the month, which ends with the annual Fun with Fibres event on the Bank Holiday Monday, 29 May. For further details of events call 01887 830583 or visit the website at www.crannog.co.uk
